World Travel Awards 2020 | TOTA Receives World's Responsible Tourism Award
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) is honoured to receive the World's Responsible Tourism Award from the 2020 World Travel Awards. This is the third year that TOTA has been recognized for their continuous work towards the global standards of responsible tourism and sustainable destination management.
Keen to maximize the benefits of this popular Canadian destination yet dedicated to protecting the region's natural, cultural, social, and economic heritage, TOTA embarked on an 18-month process that ultimately led to the adoption of a 10-year regional strategy in 2012. Titled "Embracing Our Potential," this strategy ensures that every initiative is underscored by a commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. This strategy was refreshed in 2019 for the coming decade, after the Thompson Okanagan region was officially certified as the first in the Americas to achieve the Biosphere Certified Destination accreditation from the Responsible Tourism Institute.
Thanks to an all-encompassing, holistic approach to destination stewardship and the ongoing development of year-round, accessible, and Indigenous tourism experiences, the Thompson Okanagan continues to be an international leader of sustainable tourism.
